Low Carbon M&E Project Shirebrook Enterprise Centre, Mansfield

Project Overview

Construction of an exemplar enterprise building designed to provide short-term accommodation for fledgling businesses and SMEs. Sustainable development with many low/zero carbon technologies, inc solar PV, wind turbine, gas absorption heat pumps, rainwater harvesting, LED lighting and natural ventilation – Awarded BREEAM Excellent rating.

Description

Developed for Bolsover District Council, Shirebrook Enterprise Centre provides cutting edge low carbon accommodation for new businesses. The development demonstrates the wide range of low and zero carbon technologies that can be successfully and cost effec-tively integrated into modern commercial buildings.

Constructed under a design and build contract where Briar Associates were appointed to provide expert low carbon feasibility advice, full mechanical and electrical services design, and project management. The project has successfully married practical, low cost office accommodation with high tech building services design, minimising long-term operational costs for both the client and building tenants.

BDC were keen to minimise the long-term environmental impact of the building, whilst supporting local businesses with high quality, low cost accommodation. The project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating through the integration of many cost effective, practical low carbon technologies, including solar PV, a small scale wind turbine, gas absorption heat pumps serving low energy underfloor heating, LED lighting with dimming controls, rainwater harvesting, natural passive stack ventilation and advanced building management system controls. The result is an innovative office building that has minimised long-term energy consumption, carbon emissions and ensured low running costs throughout its lifetime.

Briar Associates were appointed as a result of our expertise and experience in undertaking technical feasibilities and developing formal business cases for low and zero carbon technologies, then integrating these technologies into our wider low carbon M&E design solutions within commercial buildings where capital cost, running cost and performance are crucial to ensure profitability. The project was delivered in association with James Totty Architects, Sheffield.
