Low Carbon M&E Project Victoria Park Medical Centre, Leicester

Project Overview:

Construction of a purpose built medical facility to provide a diverse range of specialist accommodation for staff and patients. Development included many low carbon technologies, including low energy lighting, air source heat pumps serving low energy underfloor heating, natural ventilation and a sedum roof – Awarded BREEAM Excellent rating.

Description

Developed for the NHS in Leicester, Victoria Park Medical Centre provides purpose built low energy medical facilities that demonstrates the wide range of low carbon technologies that can be successfully and cost effectively integrated into clean, low maintenance NHS facilities.

Constructed under a design and build contract where Briar Associates were appointed to provide expert low carbon feasibility advice, full mechanical and electrical services design and project management. The project has successfully combined modern high quality, flexible specialist medical facilities including treatment rooms, consultants rooms, clean/dirty utility rooms, pharmacy, canteen and shower facilities, with high tech building services design, thus minimising long-term carbon emissions and operational costs.

In line with the original performance criteria, the project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating through the integration of many cost effective, practical low carbon technologies, including air source heat pumps serving an hygienic low maintenance underfloor heating system that allows room zoning to match operational hours, low energy lighting with automatic controls, natural ventilation and advanced BMS controls. The result is a flexible building that has minimised long-term energy consumption, carbon emissions and ensured low running costs throughout its lifetime.

Briar Associates were appointed as a result of our expertise and experience in undertaking technical feasibilities and developing formal business cases for low and zero carbon technologies, then integrating these into our wider low carbon M&E design solutions within healthcare buildings where clean, practical, low maintenance design is key to delivering a successful clinical environment, whilst also minimising capital cost, running costs and providing reliability to ensure value for money. The project was delivered in association with West Hart Partnership Architects, Tamworth.
